IMPACT OF ONE’S OWN
SOCIALIZATION PROCESS ON BECOMING A TEACHER AND ITS LIMITATION
Socialization
can be defined as an activity of mixing socially with others. Socialization
refers to the meaning of one being able to relate in a pleasant type of companionship
with a friend or associate. The socialization process allows the individual get
adjusted with the norms of a given social group or society. It prepares the
individual to fit in the group and to perform the social roles. It is a process
through which the younger generation learns the adult role which it has to play
subsequently.
I
have chosen a career in education because I believe that it is one of the most
important functions performed in our culture. I believe that teachers
individually and collectively have the ability to not only change the world but
to improve it. Though it’s my decision to become a teacher but there are many individuals
who influenced me to become a teacher.
Though
in my family there are many teachers that is my sisters, cousin's and uncles
but it was my mother(non-teacher) who believed that by becoming a teacher I can
contribute to the community in a meaningful way. She always told me that
teaching is one of the most direct ways to make an impact, if you are driven by
the desire to help those around you and thus being a teacher is an invaluable
contribution.
An
excellent teacher is not just someone who explains. Not someone who just
demonstrates. An excellent teacher is someone who inspires. My higher secondary
school history teacher inspired me for a lifelong interest in History. She was
not only supportive but always told me that I would do great things one day.
She took time with us and wanted us to do something special in life. She emphasized
on reading, she made us read encyclopedia. She pushed me to go on and study
history for post-graduation.
Friends
are very important in life. My friends in my school and neighborhood always
motivated me to become a teacher. When I was in school I was part of school
volleyball team. My friends were not so good in studies but were champions of
state school volleyball. As one of the team member failed in the social science
subject, my Coach told me to explain the lessons to my friend who had failed in
the exam. When she answered the next she passed with flying colors and I still
remember the way my friend thanked me with tears in her eyes and my Coach
praised me in front of the team. This motivated me to become a teacher and give
special time to weak students.
As
a teacher trainee I was very motivated by method teachers from college. They emphasized
how it is vital to keep the children busy and excited in what they are involved
in.
As
I conducted activities for internship in the school, I tried to nourish a
child's cognitive and physical needs. This helped me feel better about myself.
I felt it is the teacher’s responsibility to nourish child's cognitive and
physical needs.
My
peers in training college did not much help me in initial stage but later with
peer observations lessons, I developed skills in organizing and planning
learning activities, working or collaborating with others, giving and receiving
feedback and evaluating learning.
There
are always two sides to a story. There are pros and cons. It becomes difficult
for an individual to make his or hers own with socialization. Being a teacher
is a very stressful job at times. Also everybody wants to become teacher
nowadays and due to many reforms there is also threat of job loss.
Though
with all difficulties but I am sure that my journey as a teacher will be a
passionate one!
